Topps Baseball Cards from the Golden Age
Elmer Valo
August 27, 2008
Just
Plain Fantastic! This baseball card of Elmer Valo (Topps 1956
#3) displays his fielding ability in good fashion. In
1948, before nearly 70,000 fans at Yankee Stadium, Valo broke
several ribs leaping over the right field wall to rob Yogi Berra
of a certain home run and then fell back onto the field
unconscious. Without telling anyone he taped his ribs so he
could continue to play since the A’s were contenders for first
place. Valo set the major league pinch hitting season records
for games, walks and times on base in 1960. He also set a career
record with 91 walks as a pinch-hitter. His career lasted
20 years with a lifetime batting average of .282.
